Why Do Some Lawns Cope Better in a Drought Than Others?

If you’ve walked around your neighbourhood this summer, you’ll have noticed something odd. Some lawns are bone dry and straw coloured. Others, on the same street, in the same weather, still have a hint of green to them. So what’s the difference?

Dormancy isn’t damage

First, the reassuring part. A brown, tired looking lawn in a dry spell isn’t a lawn that’s dying. It’s a lawn that’s gone dormant, a natural, self-protective response to prolonged heat and low rainfall. The roots are alive underneath, simply waiting for conditions to improve.

The real question isn’t whether a lawn will recover. Established, well cared for lawns almost always do. The question is how long dormancy lasts, and how complete the recovery is once the rain returns. That’s where some lawns have a genuine advantage over others.

The difference usually comes down to thatch and compaction

Two things determine how well a lawn copes with dry weather: how much thatch it’s carrying, and how compacted the soil underneath has become.

Thatch is the layer of dead organic matter that builds up between the grass and the soil surface. A small amount is normal, but too much acts like a barrier, stopping water, air and nutrients from reaching the roots where they’re needed. In dry weather, a thatchy lawn dries out faster, because what little moisture is available struggles to get past the thatch layer in the first place.

Compaction is what happens when soil gets pressed down over time, from foot traffic, mowing, or simply years of use. Compacted soil has less space between its particles, which means less room to hold water and less room for roots to grow deeply in search of it. A compacted lawn’s roots tend to stay shallow, which leaves them more exposed when the top layer of soil dries out.

Put the two together, and you can see why some lawns dry out and go dormant sooner than others, and why they’re slower to bounce back once the rain returns. A lawn with low thatch and well aerated soil holds onto moisture for longer, keeps its roots deeper and better protected, and comes through a dry spell in noticeably better shape.

Why this matters beyond just one summer

This isn’t really about any single hot week. It’s about how a lawn is looked after across the whole year. Regular aeration relieves compaction and opens up the soil structure. Regular scarification keeps thatch levels down. Together, they build a lawn that’s naturally more resilient, not just to one dry summer, but to whatever conditions come its way.

We can’t change the weather. But a lawn that’s been properly cared for through the year genuinely does cope better when the weather turns difficult, and that’s not a coincidence. It’s the direct result of the groundwork that’s gone in beforehand.

What to do if your lawn is showing the strain

If your lawn is looking brown and tired right now, the advice is simple: don’t panic, and don’t reach for the hose. Letting the lawn search for its own moisture encourages deeper root growth, which is a better long-term outcome than surface watering.
