Greener Gardens took time out this autumn to visit the world’s largest lawn and garden show in Kentucky, USA. The show was that large, it took two days to see the areas we had identified as important must see.
GIE Lawn and Garden Show Day One
We met our USA industry contact, who set us on our way with our first introduction. We were told that to see everything in the indoor area, it’s not uncommon to walk 10k, and we did! The indoor hall included everything, from lawncare and grounds maintenance, to outdoor Christmas lights; in the USA, service providers like Greener Gardens, dress houses for Christmas. We even sampled coffee from an ‘in your van’ coffee machine!
Laden with information about new products and technological advances, including future market trends of the USA lawn care market, which is a staggering €99 billion industry. We set off for downtown Louisville to reflect on our learning and to enjoy the evening entertainment events, all part of the show.
GIE Lawn and Garden Show Day Two
The outdoor area was opened for two days of machinery demonstrations, show your driving licence and you can have a go! We calculated the outdoor area was 100,000m2 or 150 Wimbledon Tennis Courts.
We rounded the day off with another trip downtown for more networking, music, free pizza and a Bourbon or two!
Our trip continued with a visit to a Cincinnati leading independent lawncare operator, here we compared legislative, operational and lawn care problems, reassuringly we found many similarities.
It wasn’t all work, we did manage twenty-four hours in Chicago for some sightseeing and people watching, plus an evening Halloween parade. Halloween is a big celebration, with many people dressing up their homes. Yes, we did try out some local craft beers and ribs, as in the UK, there is a huge selection of small craft breweries.
