Understanding Your Lawn’s Moss Report
As part of your recent lawn visit, your Greener Gardens technician may have noted areas of moss developing. Moss thrives in damp, shaded or compacted areas over winter — but with the right approach, it can be managed effectively.
Why Winter Moss?
Moss loves the cool, wet conditions we see through autumn and winter. While grass slows its growth, moss continues to spread — especially where there’s low light, poor drainage or compaction.
What Greener Gardens Will Be Doing
- Winter Treatment: Professional moss control to suppress growth during peak moss conditions.
- Spring Treatment: Follow-up application and a balanced feed to support grass recovery and thickening.
What You Can Do This Winter
- Go gentle now: After your winter treatment, avoid aggressive raking. If needed, do a light, localised rake only.
- Main clean-up in spring: When growth resumes, you can rake out blackened moss more thoroughly and over-seed to fill gaps.
Your Integrated Approach to Reducing Moss
- Increase light: Prune overhanging trees and shrubs to let more sunlight reach the lawn.
- Improve drainage (Aeration): Relieve compaction so air and water can reach the roots.
- Reduce thatch (Scarification): Remove the spongey layer that holds moisture and encourages moss.
Looking Ahead: Natural Moss Digester
For ongoing improvement, consider using our Natural Moss Digester in early summer. It helps break down dead moss naturally, enriching the soil and promoting a denser, healthier sward.
