Lawn Fungal Diseases

Red Thread a Lawn Fungal Disease

Red Thread (Laetisaria Fuciformis)

This disease is often seen on lawns in the UK from mid summer through to and including the autumn time. It is often seen on fine fescue lawns, but can develop on all types of lawn. Coloured patches will appear and in wet weather on closer inspection of these irregular patches you will see deep red slender spikes growing up through the grass.

Our summer feed can help prevent 'Red Thread', which attacks the leaves of the grass, especially the fine leaved varieties.

It is a fairly minor disease that in most cases does relatively little damage.

What Grasses are affected?

It is often seen on fine fescue lawns but can develop on all lawn types.

What does it do?

It can leave patches of turf in a straw like brown condition, which can leave the entire lawn with an all over mottled effect, which looks unsightly. Studied closely you may be able to see red needles or pink cotton wool like growth on the affected areas. This is the manifestation of the fungus. More often than not the disease will run its course and as the turf grows the disease becomes less obvious, it is very infrequently that the disease is deemed worthy of treatment.

What treatments can be used?

On many occasions an application of fertiliser is more than sufficient to promote lawn growth which would be removed by cutting. The feed also strengthens the plant enabling it to "outgrow" the disease. If conditions are suitable soluble iron can also be used to dry out the fungal disease.

Can a chemical treatments can be used?

Yes, we use the latest generation of turf fungicide for control of Red Thread in managed turf.

Yes, you can buy Provardo Lawn Disease Control from Bayer
